CHANTS

The first way to use your voice magically is by learning to chant. Chanting is otherworldly. The sustained level of intention created by the repetition of words and sounds create magic. Seemingly simple phrases and melodies become something sacred and open the door to the unseen worlds. The magic is simple and timeless. It enchants those who hear the call of the old ways. To the time when women’s voices wove threads of wisdom.

Below are some chants old and some chants new. I normally repeat them at least three times and use them when I am out walking, creating, or moving to a trance state. The first two lines of The Witches Reel was said to be song by the accused witches from North Berwick while they danced in the auld kirk to raise a storm to sink the king's ship. My version is a bit more Scots.

THE WITCHES REEL

Cummer go ye afore, Cummer go ye

If ye willna go afore, Cummer let me

Ring-a-ring-a-widdershins

Linking lithley widdershins,

Cummer Carlin Crone an’ Queyn

Roun go we

Cummer go ye afore, Cummer go ye

If ye willna go afore, Cummer let me

Ring-a-ring-a-widdershins

Loopin' lightly widdershins

Kilted coats an’ fleein' hair

Three times three

Cummer go ye afore, cummer go ye

If ye willna go afore, cummer let me

Ring-a-ring-a-widdershins

Whirlin' skirlin' widdershins

De'il tak the hindmost

Wha'er she be

I AM CHANT by Rowan Morrison (do not use without permission)

I am wild, I am woman,

I am blood, I am bone.

I am cat, I am crow,

Shifting Shape, I am.

I am wild, I am witch

I am blood, I am bone.

I am hare, I am hind,

Shifting Shape, I am.

I am wild, I am wise,

I am blood, I am bone.

I am fur, I am feather,

Shifting Shape, I am.

STORYTELLING FEEDBACK

“Rowan Morrison’s beautiful storytelling is magical. Evocative of the true Bardic dreaming of this land”. (Maxine Smillie)
